Printers
Q: What is printer emulation?
A: Printer emulation refers to the
programming a particular printer includes to emulate
certain models or modes of printing. The most common
question(s) of emulation comes when dealing with the
"Okidata 320" printer model as the emulation
is done through a physical replacement of the eprom
IC chip on the logic board of the printer. There are
(3) modes of emulation for an Okidata 320 printer they
are: IBM, Epson (EI), and Microline. The majority of
people use the IBM/Epson emulation, especially when
using the printer with a PC. The Okidata 393 has a removable
programming card that houses the emulation and fonts
for the printer.
Q: What printer is right for
my needs?
A: Generally the software supplier
will specify a small list of compatible printers to
use. Depending on your needs from there you may need
a wide carriage printer, one with a single sheet feeder
assembly, serial interface, high speed, top tractor
capability, or any other possible configuration to fit
your needs.
Q: What paper do I use for my printer?
A: Dot matrix printers will use either
continuous feed paper or single sheets. Laser printers
will use single sheet paper as well as envelopes, card
stock, labels, etc. Continuous feed paper is usually
multipart and used for invoicing. Wide carriage continuous
is generally used for inventory or product lists. Thermal
printers use a special label that is sensitive to heat
or made to accept a thermal transfer from a specially
made ribbon.
Q: Where do I get drivers for my printer?
A: The best place for drivers has
always been the manufacturers website. click
here for a list of manufacturers and links to thier
drivers page(s). We have done the work for you so you
don't waste time sifting through a manufacturers site
to find the drivers for your product.
Q: What are cosmetics or covers?
A: Cosmetics and covers are terms
used to describe the plastic covers found on printers.
On the dot matrixs variety the covers are sometimes
removed for ease of use. The result is more noise, exposure
to dirt and the environment shortening the service intervals
or life of the printer if severe. Generally there is
a front cover (covers the printhead and ribbon area
to keep dust out and noise to a minimum), a rear cover
(covers the paper feed tractors to keep out dust and
dirt), a single sheet feeder (used for feeding single
sheets of paper into the printer instead of using continuous
feed paper. Most likely removed if not using this option
and in most cases broken (upon removal), and a paper
guide (generally snaps onto the "platen" of
the printer and has a ruler imprinted on it.).
